Having reached its 21st vintage, this vineyard has proved a worthy follow up to its older sibling; a contender for fan favorite, even. It was planted entirely with Dijon types of Pinot Noir, just as those were becoming available in Oregon, and seems to have benefitted from that among many other lucky and/or thoughtful decisions. 

The 2022 is richly textured and quite nearly mimics a chunky strawberry cobbler with baking spice and brown butter.

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS

The Beaux Frères Vineyard is located on an 88-acre farm atop Ribbon Ridge near Newberg, Oregon. Tall and stately Douglas fir trees cover nearly 50 acres of the farm, with homestead and winery buildings occupying another 8 acres. The vineyard is situated on 30 acres (24 of which are planted) of steep, contiguous southeast, south and southwest facing hillsides of Willakenzie soils at elevations of around 400 feet.

Planting began in 1988 with tightly spaced Pinot Noir vines at a density of about 2200 plants to the acre. The oldest vines in the vineyard are now a seasoned 37 years of age, and the vineyard as a whole is a mixture of own-rooted Pommard and Wädenswil clones and younger Dijon clones on phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.

The Upper Terrace Vineyard, just north and a bit higher elevation from Beaux Frères Vineyard, was first planted in 2000. It is comprised of Dijon clones of Pinot Noir covering about 9 acres of the 40 acre site – the rest densely forested and lush with flora and fauna.

The farm team has now begun its own nursery project, grafting healthy cuttings from our most exceptional vines onto resilient rootstocks that we hope to have in our vineyards for generations to come. It is the source of vines for a third property connecting the two prior estates that had its first harvest in 2023. So far, it is referred to as The Bridge Vineyard.

Ownership of Beaux Frères is now shared by Michael G. Etzel along with Artemis Domaines, bringing a unique Oregon terrain into a family of world-class estates that includes Château Latour, Domaine d’Eugenie, Clos de Tart, Château-Grillet, Champagne Jacquesson, and Bouchard Père et Fils in France, and Eisele Vineyard in Napa. With this evolution, the heart of Beaux Frères’ winemaking traditions over decades has now connected with its motherland.
