"Lovely garnet hue but with some crimson brightness there as well. The nose shows some quiet spice and musk at this stage, with a gentle calm aromatic sweetness rather than strident coconut ice/lollipop Grenache. Some spicy herb and garrigue on the initial tasting but leading into a plush, sweet structure with mid palate weight and smoothness. Will richen and develop more highly perfumed and complex flavours with time."
--------THE PRODUCER--------
Charles Melton
Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines, at our winery on Krondorf Road, since 1984. It was in the mid 1980's that Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was considered then to be a couple of unfashionable varieties; Shiraz and Grenache.
With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right.
--------THE GRAPE--------
Grenache
Grenache is the French name, and Garnacha the Spanish, of this great red grape varietal. It is the leading grape of the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and many of the wines from the south of France. It is also known across Spain but most famous for being part of the red blend that makes up Rioja reds.
--------THE REGION--------
Barossa Valley
Barossa Valley is one of the most well known regions across Australia as well as being one of the most established. It is red wine country with some of the most concentrated red wines of the world being produced here. Shiraz is king followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot - recently Grenache and Mouvedre are finding more popularity.
