There has been a great deal of research conducted at Clos de Tart with the aim of increasing the notion of the different terroirs and achieve greater precision in the wine. As a result, 50% of the vintage was fermented with whole berries and Alessandro is increasingly reducing the new oak (it is now at 60% but he wants to arrive at around 35% which will mean a longer aging time). The goal is to put the complex palate of the Clos in the spotlight with its patchwork of different soils. There is abundant sweet, ripeness in the nose with fragrant red fruit aromas. On the palate, the wine is silky and long, fresh, and bright but is not giving everything away yet, and there are beguiling flavours of chocolate beans, warm spices and Autumn fruit on the finish. Lots of potential here, the wine will be released in four years’ time.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Clos de Tart
Morey-St-Denis, Cote de Nuits, Borgogne, France
Historic Wines of Eminence.
Clos de Tart is an historic domaine founded in 1141 by nuns - Les Bernardines de Tart. The Clos is also the largest of Burgundy's grand cru monopoles which has never been broken up and split into multiple ownership. In 2017 however the domaine was sold to Artémis - François Pinault's group who also own Domaine d'Eugenie (and Chateau Latour). Some changes have been made - one being a reduction in new wood and the second being an introduction of a new winemaker - Alessandro Noli - who shared the 2018 vintage with former winemaker Jacques Devauges.
The Clos de Tart is one of the most unique climats in Burgundy. A single Grand cru Monopole residing in its own walled vineyard. Here the vines are planted across the slope - rather than from top to bottom which is usual in Burgundy. This helps take advantage of late afternoon sun and also allows for blocks to be harvested separately to take advantage of the different subsoils. These different components are then blended in the final wine.
Alessandro Noli explained that Devauges harvested and vinified the 2018s . Yields for the Clos itself were approximately 33 hl/ha with a potential alcohol of 14%. No whole clusters were used to ferment the young vines Morey villages and La Forge de Tart 1er, though about 65% was used for the Clos. Allen Meadows, The Burghound.
