Grenache
Grenache is a generous, sun-loving red grape that thrives in the warm climates of southern France and Spain, where it's the backbone of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the wines of the southern Rhône, and is known as Garnacha in Priorat and Rioja. It makes ripe, medium-bodied reds with raspberry, strawberry, white pepper and warm spice, soft tannins and often a heady alcohol warmth, and it also makes excellent rosé. It's a star of Australia's McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley, where old bush vines produce some of the country's best examples, and is a great match for roast lamb, grilled sausages, slow-cooked stews and Mediterranean dishes.
