Nero d'Avola
Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most important red grape, named after the town of Avola in the island's south-east, where it's best known from Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only DOCG, and as the signature red of the Noto area. It makes generous, full-bodied reds with ripe black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and a touch of spice, supported by firm tannins and warm, sun-ripened fruit, and the best examples are rich yet fresh. It's also grown in Australia and California, and is a great match for grilled red meats, aubergine, rich tomato-based pasta and aged cheeses.
