It is deep ruby in colour, with brownish flecks towards the edge. The nose is a feast of vibrant red fruit suggesting raspberry, plum and pomegranate, anchored with a savoury underlay of spicy pepper, cinnamon, mushroom and black olive tapenade. Extended bottle age has given this wine a wonderfully complex and captivating bouquet. The palate is powerfully expressive, with a rich and textured mouth-feel, replete with velvety tannins and a seam of refreshing acidity that delivers a long and satisfying close

--------THE PRODUCER--------

Pegasus Bay

Pegasus Bay was established by the Donaldson family, pioneers of the Canterbury wine industry. Professor Ivan Donaldson, a consultant neurologist, planted one of the region’s first vineyards in the mid 1970’s. Ivan quickly saw the huge potential for grape growing in the region and in 1985 established what is now Pegasus Bay’s home vineyard with his wife Christine and their four sons in the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury. Three of their four sons are now part of the business. The estate’s primary focus is Pinot Noir and Riesling.

--------THE GRAPE--------

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir produces some of the world's most expensive, most lauded, rarest and delicious wines. Equally it is one of the most difficult grapes to grow successfully and as a result it is quite hard to make a balanced Pinot Noir. It is historically from Burgundy, most specifically in the Cote de Nuits, so much so that people will refer to Pinot Noir as a 'Burgundy'.

--------THE REGION--------

Waipara

Waipara is one of the premium wine regions in New Zealand located just outside of Christchurch in the south island. It is known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and aromatic grapes with Riesling being at the forefront. With an array of limestone soils strewn across the region it is believed to be the best region for Pinot Noir (and most Burgundian) in the country. Top winemakers such as Pegasus Bay, Bell Hill, Pyramid Valley and Tongue in Groove are there.
