--------THE PRODUCER--------
Alta Mora
The vineyards of Mt Etna,700 to 1200 metres above sea level, were walked of and left idle by many after the second world war as life was just too tough. Now a new breed of dedicated winemakers including Alta Mora are investing in restoring the vineyards, and making incredibly elegant yet intense wines out of Etna's indigenous varieties, in dark volcanic soil.
--------THE GRAPE--------
Nerello Mascalese
Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety that is indigenous to Etna, Sicily, and was first mentioned in the 18th century. It is a child of Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco. Nerello Mascalese is one of the most important native grape varieties across the vineyards of Sicily. It shines as the dominant variety in Etna Rosso blends. Sicily has 3,985ha devoted to it.
