"For the better guarantee of product authenticity of this aromatic bitters the label on every bottle bears a facsimile of the signature of Dr. J.G.B. Siegert.  There are other aromatic bitters, but only one Angostura aromatic bitters.  Angostura was first made in 1824 and may be distinguished from all other bitters by its fine flavour and aromatic odour. Produced in Port of Spain, Trinidad, W.I. by Angostura Limited from the original formula.”

Angostura

The company was founded around 1830 in the Venezuelan town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar) by a German doctor, Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, Surgeon-General in Simon Bolivar's army in Venezuela. Around 1820 he had tried to find a medicine to improve appetite and digestive well-being of the soldiers.
