BEER IS THE WORD OF THE MONTH

Kia Ora, wine and spirited friends.
The year is almost at a close and, I say this at this time every year,  I can't believe it! I am always amazed when I look back on the year and reflect on the events that have unfolded. We hope that when you reflect on your year, it you can say that it has been a good one.
This month, Tristan will introduce a small Matakana producer that you NEED to know about. We have a new, dedicated beer fridge and our resident craft beer curator, Frankie, will tell you about that. Martin will take you on a Vermouth journey. Why? Because he's spent a lot of his wine journey exploring Spain, and because he loves it - WE ALL DO!

I have said this many a time, but we at Cahn's take great pride in championing great local producers; most importantly, we love the direct relationships we have with them. I met Karl Nola as a customer in the shop, and we got talking about Chenin Blanc - because we love it - and then he mentioned he grew grapes and made wine from his small estate in Matakana. Like most producers, Karl makes conventional wines like Chardonnay and Syrah. However, it was the Chenin Blanc and Marsanne that pleased my taste buds the most. "Something a little different", I thought, and both of exceptional quality. The Reserve Syrah 2019 was also a standout - for those who prefer a more elegant expression of this grape. Since it is a rare variety to be planted in New Zealand, you should also try the Tempranillo.

SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING INTERESTING

New Arrivals this Month

We are that place where you discover products that you cannot find elsewhere. Check out our fresh new arrivals and collectables.

We’ll make sure the fridge is stocked with a selection of well-curated NZ craft beers, carrying the classic grab-and-go six packs, and some more esoteric beers. We intend carrying a decent mix of most of the different beer styles. As much as I’d love to have a whole row of scotch ales or Rauchbiers, it’s probably better to stock beers our customers will enjoy (but feel free to let us know if there are beers you would like us to stock).

Craft beer is currently at a weird time in its life, and we feel it’s important that we do our best to support our local small producers over the big international brands. Beer that’s brewed closer to us is fresher, and it’s often made with much more attention to detail. The NZ beer scene is currently in a really strong place in terms of quality, with easy access to some of the best hops and grain for making beer, never mind having a great climate for cool shipping beers and for aging. Let’s celebrate our local beer industry by drinking more local Beer¡
Cheers!

It is always ‘the hour for vermouth’ for me. While my German origins should have introduced me to this delicious aperitif, it was during my many visits to Spain that my palate fell in love. Walk into any local bar in Spain and ask for ¡Vermut! They will prepare a small flat glass with an olive and a half-slice of Seville orange, perhaps a block of ice and then turn around to reach for the small barrel of house vermut. Turn the tap and a generous dose of vermut drowns the glass-dwellers. All this for a few Euros. When I was contacted by a Spanish winery in early 2017, who had just launched a range of beautifully-packaged Vermouths, I added another stop to my already daunting itinerary: Germany, Armenia, Georgia, Italy and Spain. A little ‘over’ Barcelona, I side-stepped that tourist trap and headed straight down to Tarragona and then inland, up towards the village of Brafím (pop. 400), the home of Vins Padró (née 1886). I was met by Louise Jorgensen, whose perfect English made the introduction and tour that much easier and more interesting. The winery had historically only produced commercial table wine and vermouths. One of the sons of the 5th generation of the Padró family came up with the idea of a PREMIUM range of vermouths. All the infrastructure and winemaking skills were already in place. Add design, packaging and a complete range of five different vermouths and – voilá – you’ve nabbed New Zealand distribution. The approach (as the photographs show) is extremely artisanal. Botanicals, herbs, roots and spices are flown in from all over the world and also grown in Spain. Whether you are drinking a Negroni, a Boulevardier, a straight vermouth or another cocktail asking for Vermouth as an ingredient, Vins Padró vermouths are your go-to. Not only are they crafted in small quantities, their packaging adds untold glamour to your drinks trolley or bar. For an introduction to vermut, head up to San Ray on Ponsonby Road and ask Camilo to lead you through their extensive list.

LET US DO THE HARD GRAFT…

We look forward to seeing you at Cahn’s again soon.  And remember to visit Aleks and Hugo at ground wine bar, below the shop (open 7 days a week).
