The Year Marches on
Martin left on a jet plane; Tristan and Frankie man the fort.

Kia Ora wine and spirited friends.
Welcome to March, the best time of the year for weather, IMO. Not too hot; not too cold, just perfect. Martin is currently gallivanting around South Africa, leaving Frankie and me to hold the fort, and so far we're doing great. But we do miss our beloved Cahn. An exciting month as we have quite the array of new products, including our own Central Otago Pinot Noir from a mystery and legendary producer whose name we cannot mention.
See below for more information.

WE HAVE OUR OWN PINOT NOIR!
|
|
|
!!! mmmmm. We have a Cahn's Central Otago Pinot Noir in the shop. It has been made specifically for us by a legendary (mystery) producer. This is not just another mediocre celebrity product. It is a very serious Pinot.
The wine comes from premium vineyards in Central Otago, including Pisa, Bendigo, Bannockburn and Gibbston. It has 20% new oak and 20% whole cluster. The winemaking approach is a little different, as it spent an extra 3 months in older oak after racking and 7 months in stainless steel before bottling (unfiltered).
Vintage 2024 is being celebrated as one of the best in a long time throughout New Zealand.
AND! It's exceptional value. Pop into Cahn’s or go on line to get yours.

We sell a lot of Blanc, especially at this time of year. It is New Zealand’s most grown and produced varietal. On the world stage, it is what we, as a wine-producing region, have become known for. However, anyone who knows a thing or two about wine understands that we are capable of so much more. Sauvignon Blanc is a much-loved variety, but it also gets a lot of stick - even in industry circles. But why? Are we just ‘hating’ because it’s popular? Or do we just not like the flavours of grass, citrus, green capsicum, gooseberry and passionfruit? Or maybe we are just conditioned to think we only need to spend $18.00 on a bottle from our local grocery store. Personally (Tristan), I really like Sauvignon Blanc, and I always say you need to wade through all the $18.00 or less junk to get to the gems, and, of course, we can do that at Cahn’s.
Check out our diverse Sauvignon Blanc selection. A thing to remember is that Sauvignon Blanc is not just a New Zealand thing, and actually originated in the Old World - most likely France. Styles also differ vastly from region to region, i.e. fruit-forward, herbaceous/grassy, and mineral. So, if you are a stern objector to Sauv, let us bring you back to the light. And if you are a devout Sauv cleric, then we'll give you many more worthy of worship.

Fresh Hop Season is Upon Us
|
|
|
Yet another hop harvest has come and gone, and with that arrives a very special time for the NZ craft beer industry. Fresh Hop Season. In the coming weeks, expect to see more IPAs and Pilsners made with fresh-off-the-bine hops, rather than their dried and pelletised counterparts. A delicate plant, some brewers even opt to have them flown in to keep them as fresh as possible before they are dropped into the brew. Expect bolder, fresh and almost green flavours, more dank fruits and even a bit of tannin from the Hops.
We’ll be getting a few in when they’re ready. I (Frankie) will be picky, so I am doing all the hard work to make sure we’re only stocking the best of this year’s Harvest!

Martin Talks:
Counting Crows

I was recently reading an interview with Counting Crows (and who hasn’t, counted crows that is?) frontman Adam Duritz on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Johannesburg. He was asked for a career highlight. His answer: “To me, it’s just that we’ve gotten to spend our whole life doing it. There are moments that were exciting here and there, I suppose, but the real exciting thing is just to spend your whole life playing music.”
‘Click’ it went in my head. If someone were to ask me that question, my answer would be similar. A life (now spanning 39 years!) working within the alcoholic beverage industry. Opportunities to travel to far-flung places (Peru, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia) plus all the usual (wine) suspects and to meet and engage with humans from all walks of life, connect, write memorable stories and some memorable for the wrong reasons. Meeting YOU!, our customers and friends at Cahn’s.
So, here I am again, nourishing the network of friends, family and suppliers. The next few weeks will see me cruising through the wine regions of the Western Cape, listening and tasting. There is nothing like being in situ and learning from the horse’s mouth and drinking from its trough. I look forward to regaling you with news from the South African wine industry when I return.
Cheers, prost, gesondheid and, I am writing this on St. Patrick’s Day, Sláinte!
