"The Kirche is our homage to the great Australian Shiraz/Cabernet style. The 2018 is a beautifully aromatic wine, with the blackberry/briar Cabernet perfumes giving a real interest on the nose and also adding a degree of balancing finesse to the Shiraz components’ richness and weight. Some rounded tannic grip augers well for the longevity of this wine, with a lovely gentle, but apparent cut of acidity giving the wine some real vibrancy."
Charles Melton
With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right.
Syrah/Shiraz
Both Syrah or Shiraz is the name given to this grape varietal depending on where you are in the world. In France, particularly in the Rhone Valley, it goes by the name of Syrah and it makes the floral reds of Hermitage, Cornas, St Joseph and Cote Rôtie. Whereas in Australia, particularly in the Barossa Valley, it is Shiraz and it produces bolder, spicier and oaky red wines. It is planted across the world in the warmest of regions and it is usually dependant on how the winemaker produces as to what it's name will be either in the prettier female style or the bulkier masculine style.
