93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Inky ruby. Pungent, mineral-accented black and blue fruit qualities on the nose, along with hints of olive, licorice and peony that build in the glass. Supple and weighty on the palate, offering expansive blackberry and boysenberry flavors that become firmer with air. The floral note comes back strong on the penetrating finish, which shows outstanding persistence and fine-grained, well-knit tannins. 60% of this fruit was sourced from the granitic soils and steep slopes in the northern sector of the appellation and the other 40% came from the south, where the soils are lighter, based mostly on limestone clay and covered in large alluvial stones and smaller river rocks. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Outer quote mark Moving to the two Northern Rhône reds, the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Silene sports a dense purple/ruby color as well as classy notes of blackberries, smoked meat, ground pepper, and a touch of game. With medium-bodied richness, a rounded, silky mouthfeel, and terrific balance, enjoy this little gem of a Syrah over the coming 7-8 years. Inner quote mark (11/2020)

--------THE PRODUCER--------

DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE

Widely recognised as one of the finest producers of Hermitage, the Chave family have been tending their vines within the appellation since 1481. All the time in the world, then, to get it right, and they have done just that, with an enviable reputation for making good wines in difficult years and outstanding wines in the better ones.

While based in a small village not far from Cornas, the heart of their operation lies across the river, where they own vines in nine of the eighteen vineyards that cover the Hermitage hill. The Chaves believe the rich variety of terroir to be found there is critical when it comes to the finesse, structure and complexity they require for their blends.

After centuries of nurture, this family have an intimate understanding of their surroundings. Those plots that do not meet their elevated standards simply aren’t used. One such plot is in Les Vercandières, a thin strip at the base of the highly significant Les Bessards vineyard, which they use as a vegetable patch. Touché!
