Vineyard:

The Sangiovese comes from the stunning Biogro certified Osawa Vineyard in the Mangatahi Terraces, Hawkes Bay.

Mangatahi sits inland, on an elevated terrace of the Ngaruroro River. It’s one of the coolest subregions in Hawke’s Bay, offering a longer growing season and greater diurnal range- warm days and cool nights. This helps preserve natural acidity and perfume in slower-ripening varieties like Sangiovese, while still allowing for full flavour development.

The Osawa Vineyard, located on the Mangatahi Terraces, is planted on complex riverbed soils: predominantly alluvial gravels over clay loam. These free-draining soils help regulate vine growth and naturally limit yields- ideal for producing concentrated, expressive wines.

Vintage:

The 2024 growing season in Hawke’s Bay was warm, dry, and balanced. A return to more classic conditions after the challenges of recent years. Flowering was early and even, giving good fruit set. A dry summer allowed for slow, steady ripening without excessive heat spikes, while cool nights helped retain natural acidity.

Winemaking:

Hand picked by friends and family. The fruit was destemmed to an open top fermenter where it had a long and slow wild fermentation to build on texture, structure and fruit profile. A gentle plunge when needed and pressed in a small vertical press when the tannin profile was right. The wine then spent the next 16months maturing in seasoned oak before bottling. Handled with love and care, just a single mechanical movement across its entire élevage.

Tasting:

Enticing black forest fruits sitting underneath layers of dried rose petal, cola nut and cinnamon. There is an attractive juiciness and aromatic depth on the palate with bright natural acidity and savoury tannins leading to a long finish.

Analysis:

pH 3.26, T/A 6.9g/L, Alcohol 12%
