Vermentino, in the words of Italian wine scholar Ian D’Agata, is “a grape shrouded in mystery”. Various theories postulate its origins in Spain (which ruled Sardinia for 400 years), the island of Corsica or the region of Liguria (where it is known as Pigato).  One thing however is certain; where ever it is cultivated in the various regions of Italy and the world, Vermentino makes for delicious wine!

Sardinia’s most acclaimed producer of quality wines, Argiolas, was founded in 1938 and has since forged an International reputation as one of Italy’s top wineries, alongside the likes of Antinori and Pio Cesare. Costamolino is their flagship Vermentino and comes from 60 Ha of land located sub-region of Trexenta in southwestern Sardinia. Fresh and vibrant, it shows Vermentino’s typical notes of yellow fruit and blossoms (in particular broom) and the aromatic Mediterranean scrub. Saline and fruity, it has plenty of body and structure and pairs perfectly well with seafood-based dishes, vegetables and mains of fish and white meat.

--------THE PRODUCER--------

Argiolas

Argiolas winery is located on the island of Sardinia off the coast of central Italy. The estate that Argiolas winery now call their top vineyard was once nothing but an olive farm until the very early 20th century. It all started when Antonio Argiolas decided to plant a row of vines on his property - not originally for commercial use. It wasn't until his sons came along that things got bigger and the vineyard expanded. The winery is now in the third generation and is producing some of Sardinia's top wines. The 'Korem' and 'Turriga' are particularly sought after reds.

--------THE GRAPE--------

Vermentino

Vermentino is a white grape variety that originates on the French island of Corisca. It has been planted in Corsica since the in the 13th century and over this time was brought to Piemonte, then later to Sardinia of Italy. It also has a fairly long history in the south of France, here known as Rolle.

--------THE REGION--------

Sardinia

Sardinia is the large island off the western coast of Italy. There are predominately two grapes producing wines here. The first is Vermentino - the racy and refreshing white wine that is akin to top-quality Sauvignon Blancs. The other is a red made from Cannanou - Cannanou is the Sardinian name for Grenache, and produces spicy red wines.
