"Consistently one of the country's top Pinot Noir wines. It has a real body of red berry fruit flavours with plums and mulled berries but it is the complexity that comes from the hints of spice and undergrowth that give this Pinot Noir its charm."

Looking back at the seasonal notes of the 2020 vintage the repeating theme is `typical’. Temperature, rainfall and yields were all we could hope for in an ideal season in Martinborough.  It was a pleasure to harvest clean, impeccable fruit that had a clear, calm voice of the region and vintage. Made from only our oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is the best of six small vineyards all within 500 m of our winery.  The result is a complex, elegant wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style.

A full fragrant nose of juniper, cranberry and red plum meld with spice and herbal notes of cardamon, pink peppercorn and dried oregano. Bright and supple on entry, with finely coating tannins that extend the full length of the palate. This release exudes confidence and poise and is the perfect touchstone for our single vineyard releases.

"Our top New Zealand wine of 2022 is the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2020. It is textural, deep and seamlessly balanced, as well as supremely perfumed and vibrant. Made from the estate’s oldest parcels planted 42 years ago, it demonstrates the power of pinot noir coming out of Martinborough."

--------THE PRODUCER--------

Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is owned and run by a family trio of Clive Paton and his wife Phyll, together with Clive’s sister Alison and winemaker Helen Masters. Clive planted the bare, stony home paddock at the edge of Martinborough in 1980 and, in doing so, was one of a handful of people who pioneered grape growing in the area.

--------THE GRAPE--------

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir produces some of the world's most expensive, most lauded, rarest and delicious wines. Equally it is one of the most difficult grapes to grow successfully and as a result it is quite hard to make a balanced Pinot Noir. It is historically from Burgundy, most specifically in the Cote de Nuits, so much so that people will refer to Pinot Noir as a 'Burgundy'.

--------THE REGION--------

Martinborough

Martinborough is the region just north of the New Zealand capital city of Wellington at the base of the north island. It is Pinot Noir country down here without a doubt with a growing interest in aromatics and Bordeaux varietals. The stars are Ata Rangi, Dry River and Escarpment but there is a solid handful of excellent producers in this warm region.
