"A more floral take on the classic GSM wine from South Africa particularly indulgent in violets and dried lavendar buds. There is a meaty and solid core to the wine with a richness and plushness on the palate as far as the tannins are concerned. Black plums, cherries, black currants as well as some red berry jam flavours, too."

A fantastic winery from South Africa's Walker Bay region. Newton Johnson are seen as producing some of the liveliest Pinot Noir and Grenache-dominant wines in the coastal regions of South Africa. You have to try their sweet wine too - utterly delicious!

 

--------THE GRAPE--------

Rhone Red Blend

The Rhone Red Blend is often known as the GSM blend whereby the three main grapes are Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre. In actuality there can be up to 13 grapes made into this blend, by law, in the southern Rhone Valley. You can have lighter and more floral versions of the Rhone Red Blend or have bolder and oakier versions depending where in the world it is made. They are most popular in France, California and Australia.

 

--------THE REGION--------

Walker Bay

Walker Bay is one of the coolest regions in all of South Africa thanks to the cooling influences of the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. It also has a fairly high average altitude which means that the vineyards are higher and the growing season is longer - this gives complex wines with lots of aromatic development. It is producing, without a doubt, the best Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the country.
