ABOUT THE PRODUCER:

Waiararapa has a pioneering tradition of family-owned vineyards.  The region's winemaking history dates back to 1900 - early settler William Beetham producing "Lansdowne Claret" for his homesick French wife, Hermance, from their Masterton estate Brancepeth.

We are immensely proud to be part of this tradition, growing & making the best wine we can from our home.

6 July.  2023 Moss Oaks Rosé & 2022 Home Fields Pinot Noir are in the bottle. Very confident each is beyond ordinary. Attention turns to winter pruning - a vital task that sets up the current & coming seasons. Making progress. Still very sodden underfoot but vines appear to be in good order, in their winter hiberation. Hearing the first bleats of new lambs in neighbouring fields.  The magpies are being very territorial, chasing off kārearea & any other interlopers.  Percursors to spring, he says with wilful optimism!

Why Home Fields?

The vineyard was once part of the larger Waipipi Homestead vineyard.  The estate has since been broken into small parcels.

The Homestead was built in 1903 & bought by the Bunny family in 1909.

Three generations of the family lived in the homestead including twin brothers, who farmed the land upon their return from WWII. The story of the brother's war is extremely moving. It is not our story to tell but it certainly leaves an impression.

When we moved here, we serendipitously discovered a family history of our own going back to the 1870s Scandinavian settlement in what was to become Mauriceville. An incredible & too little known piece of early NZ history.  Well worth a few moments of your time to learn about.

More recently, the planting of the estate vineyards occurred in the early 1990's & originally included chardonanny, riesling, merlot, sauvignon blanc &  pinot noir. Ian & Jenny Macgovern planted the current vineyard & operated it for many years. They are still around. Ian will happily lend a sympathetic ear & offer a word of advice, or know when not to!

All things considered, we felt compelled to link in some way to these histories of the land & people in creating our label & brand.  Therefore, "Home" echoes the original Homestead.  "Fields" reflects something of the Opaki area & culture, which is very much a rural setting of working farms, vineyards, & folk who are generally happier out pottering in their yards, hunting in the hills, hefting firewood, tending their blueberries, practicing their long game ... popping up their heads, now & again, to revel in their own little dominion.

The label graphic is a stylised representation of the Home Fields vineyard & surrounding properties.

Two Sheds is the trading name of our business, reflected in this icon appearing on our label. Happy to talk about the origins of this. But it will need an accompanying wine to do so!
