Grgich Hills Estate

Many might be aware of the famous “Judgement of Paris” tasting of 1976. It was this very same tasting that put the Grgich wines on the map in many ways. While they were not yet an established winery, that came about in 1977, Mike Grgich was the winemaker of the winning Chardonnay (from Chateau Montelena) of the Paris tasting. Quickly after California was gaining heat after the tasting he got under way with his sister to create the now famed Grgich Hills Estate.

 

--------THE GRAPE--------

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is easily one of the most recognisable white wines on the planet. Everything from green fruits, citrus and tropical fruits to lovely floral aromatics. Historically it is found in Bordeaux where it is blended with Semillon to produce dry white wines or the luscious sweet wines of Sauternes. As a single varietal and in a leaner style it is famous in the Loire Valley specifically in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. However, New Zealand is the most famous home for it in the new world where Marlborough is king. 

 

--------THE REGION--------

California

California is the United States of America's largest and most important wine region. It produces 90% of the USA's total production - with the fair majority of that being red wines. Since it is 'always sunny in California' it is the perfect region to grow red grapes that need a lot of heat to ripen up. This has lead to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and an Italian grape varietal: Primitivo (Californian's call in Zinfandel) to being the most important red grapes. Chardonnay is the leading white followed by Sauvignon Blanc.
