Gordon & MacPhail's is famous for its use of specially selected ex-wine casks to mature some of its whiskies, and the Caol Ila's are among its most popular. This release, distilled in 2005 and filled into 1st and refill ex-bourbon barrels has spent its final year in red-wine casks from the Hermitage region in France. These casks impart lush fruit notes of the best Scottish berries (raspberries, strawberries), summer fruit compotes and orange blossom, contrasting the classic bonfire, sea-side peat smoke flavour of Caol Ila's spirit.
