Aromas take time to rev up; following seven minutes of air contact, the dormant bouquet begins to emit muted scents that include breakfast cereal, light toffee and grapes. Palate entry is moderately oily, sharp, astringent and cereal-like; by midpalate, there's more integrated, bittersweet flavors of old wood and oak resin, but also boiled cabbage, tired peat and deep-roasted malt. Concludes bitterly and hot in an astringent, resiny fashion.

Tasting notes from Jim McEwan: Color: Beautiful medium amber/honey bronze. Body: Robust, rich and vibrant. Nose: An oak explosion envelopes the olfactory senses. Sweet, mature and potent notes of baked custard, bourbon, marinated apricots, soft ripe melons dusted with light ginger and chocolate powder. Fresh oak, sawdust, crisp dry barleycorns, with underlying hazelnut and white chocolate. It finishes with deep pink, shower-moistened roses, suggesting meringue or Turkish Delight. A sublime sensory experience. Palate: On the palate the texture is beautiful and balanced. The spirit glides over the taste buds with smouldering oaky sweet warmth. The fruit and barley sugar/butterscotch flavours arrive right on time and just waiting for the invitation are candied almonds. This remarkably seductive, incredible spirit is a must for all serious single malt fans. This should not be missed. Finish: The stylish Speyside malt. This is the benchmark. All credit to the lads at the distillery. Pure magic
