Apostolos Thymiopoulos does it again with his second Wine Champion 0f 2021, first with a xinomavro from Naoussa and this time with a wine from the warmer climate of Rapsani. ‘A complete star’ was one taster’s verdict on the 2018, which sees sweetly fruited xinomavro blended with krassato and stavroto to add further richness. A crowd-pleasing but intellect-stimulating wine we can’t recommend highly enough.

Apostolos Thymiopoulos is one of the leading winemaking talents in Greece, and a master of the exciting Xinomavro grape. This is different in character to some of the Naoussa Xinomavro wines, as 50% of the blend is other native red varieties. It has a gorgeous nose of soft sweet red berry fruit and the distinctive sundried tomato note you often find in wines from this grape. Made in a slightly aromatic, Burgundian style, with 15 months in 500-litre oak barrels, it's smooth and supple with some leathery evolution.

The Producer

Thymiopoulos family has been in agriculture and grape-growing in the village of Trilofos for generations. Apostolos Thymiopoulos was the first to vinify the family vineyards while studying oenology.

In 2005, he produced his first wine named “Earth and sky”. He truly believes in sustainable viticulture and minimum intervention during the whole winemaking process.

Apostolos applies this philosophy to produce ten different expressions of xinomavro, the renowned variety of Northern Greece, trying to reveal every aspect of its potential.

Thymiopoulos winery is located in Trilofos, a village on the foothills of Vermio mountain. A place in perfect harmony with nature, offering wines that reflect their origin.
